Communication is a huge part of a child’s development, but challenges with speech sounds can make it difficult for your child to thrive. At More to Say, we offer pediatric speech therapy tailored to your child’s specific needs. Keep reading to learn more about two different types of speech sound disorders, their common indicators, and how pediatric speech therapy can help your child build effective communication skills for life.

What Is a Speech Sound Disorder?

A speech sound disorder is a condition where a child has difficulty using the appropriate speech sounds to pronounce their words correctly, impacting how other people understand them. Speech sound disorders can be organic or functional in nature. Organic speech sound disorders result from an underlying motor/neurological (e.g., dysarthria or apraxia), structural (e.g., cleft palate, tongue tie), or sensory/perceptual (e.g., hearing impairment, persistent ear infections) cause. Functional speech sound disorders have no known cause. Functional speech sound disorders include articulation and phonological disorders which will be focused on in this discussion. An articulation disorder focuses on the errors (e.g., distortions and substitutions) when producing individual speech sounds. Phonology includes phonological processes or patterns of sound errors that are seen in typical development as children learn to speak. A phonological disorder is when these phonological processes persist beyond the age a child would typically eliminate them or when the processes are different than what would be expected. These are predictable, rule-based errors that affect more than one sound.
