Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a neurological speech disorder that affects the brain’s ability to coordinate the precise movements needed to make speech sounds. This condition has nothing to do with a child’s intelligence or the strength of their oral muscles. Children who have CAS know what words they want to communicate, but their central nervous system struggles to tell the muscles in the mouth how, when, and where to move to say it.
